O you who believe, the fasts have been enjoined upon you as they were enjoined upon those before you, so that you may be God-fearing,

Taqwa Meaning :

Often, it is translated as “Fear of God”, and while fearing Allah is part of Taqwa, its meaning is deeper than this.

The linguistic meaning of Taqwa is “a shield or protective barrier”. It is to protect oneself from what angers Allah. Some scholars define Taqwa as placing a protective barrier between yourself and Allah’s punishment. Taqwa also means doing that which Allah has enjoined and avoiding that which He has forbidden.

Ibn Abbas said about,
(guidance for theMuttaqin) that it means,

“They are the believers who avoid Shirk with Allah and who work in His obedience.”

Ibn Abbas also said thatAl-Muttaqinmeans,

“Those who fear Allah’s punishment, which would result if they abandoned the true guidance that they recognize and know. They also hope in Allah’s mercy by believing in what He revealed.”

Al-Quran and Taqawa

..

Surely the noblest of you, in Allah’s sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

 – then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him. (Ali ‘Imran [3] : 76)

O you who believe, if you fear Allah, He will provide you with a criterion (to distinguish between right and wrong) and will write off your evil deeds and will forgive you. Allah is the Lord of great bounty.

And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out (At-Talaq [65] : 2)

and provides him (with what he needs) from where he does not even imagine

And whoever fears Allah, He brings about ease for him in his affair.

At-Talaq [65] : 4)

“O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness.”(Surah Araf-26)

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous

(Surah Ali ‘Imran, Quran 3:133)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who used to observe fasts?’ They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it.”

Being gentle & generous

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most generous of people and he was even more generous in Ramadan when Gabriel would meet him. He would meet him every night of Ramadan to study the Quran. Thus, the Prophet would be more generous than a refreshing wind.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah said, ‘Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except for fasting. It is for Me and I will reward it.’ Fasting is a shield, so when one of you fasts, he may not be obscene or boisterous. If someone insults him or fights him, let him say: Indeed, I am fasting. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the breath coming from the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk. The fasting person has two moments of relief he enjoys: when he breaks his fast he is joyful, and when he meets his Lord he is joyful for his fasting.
